My definition of communication is “the effective transmission of an idea from one person to another”. The Purpose of Reflective Listening Suppose a student tells you about a difficult event with a classmate. Reflective listening involves making statements that are meant to clarify and restate what the other person is saying. The usual intent of reflective listening is to build rapport and allow the other person to explore his or her thoughts and feelings about the issue being discussed in further depth. Reflective listening appears easy, but it takes hard work and skill to do well. Sometimes the “skills” we use in working with clients do not exemplify reflective listening but instead serve as roadblocks to effective communication.
Reflective listening is a communication strategy involving two key steps: seeking to understand a speaker's idea, then offering the idea back to the speaker, to confirm the idea has been understood correctly. It attempts to "reconstruct what the client is thinking and feeling and to relay this understanding back to the client".
